From Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives and Women Preachers to Woman Be Free

Here is a great post on Cheryl Schatz's blog -- a essay by Stan Gunderson about how his thinking evolved over a long period from believing that the Bible justified the subjugation of women to accepting the Bible's support for the equality of women and men. The beginning of his journey was a book written by my granddad --   Bobbed Hair, Bossy Wives and Women Preachers -- the story of that book is one I tell in my own book, The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family. Gunderson's conclusion was inspired by a book written by his wife Patricia Gundry -- Woman Be Free. When John R. Rice's book was published, a photograph of my mother (then 14 years old) was used to illustrate the proper length of hair for a Christian woman!

Thank you, Stan and Cheryl, for sharing this great story.
